Inpex to supply carbon-neutral propane to Astomos

Japan’s Inpex said it would supply carbon-neutral propane to compatriot Astomos Energy from its Ichthys LNG export plant near Darvin, Australia.

In that regard, the duo entered into a carbon-neutral propane gas (CN propane)
sales and purchase agreement, according to a joint statement on Thursday.

The CN propane to be supplied through this agreement would be sourced from the LPG produced from the Ichthys LNG project, the statement said.

Inpex said it would offset the carbon footprint of the propane gas using carbon credits applied to greenhouse gas emissions across the entire propane supply chain.

This includes upstream production, liquefaction, marketing, transportation and combustion by customers in Japan.

Moreover, this agreement marks Inpex’s first CN propane supply, it said.

Inpex has already signed deals to supply carbon-neutral LNG cargoes from the Ichthys facility. This includes the most recent deal with Toho Gas and with Shizouka Gas.

On the other side, Astomos and Shell have earlier this year realized the world’s first carbon-neutral LPG shipment.
