NYK and partners move forward with plans to build ammonia-ready LNG-fueled vessel

Japan’s shipping giant NYK and its partners MTI and Elomatic are moving forward with their plans to build an ammonia-ready LNG-fueled vessel (ARLFV).

The project aims to build an LNG-fueled vessel that can be efficiently converted to an ammonia-fueled vessel, or ARLFV.

NYK revealed this development with the institute and the Finnish engineering firm in September last year and in March this year the partners designed an ARLFV to perform the functions of a pure car carrier and a post-panamax bulker.

Now, the three companies have completed the concept designs of a capesize bulk carrier and a very large crude oil tanker (VLCC) in Phase 1.5 of the project, NYK said in a statement on Monday.

Compared to a conventional LNG-fueled vessel, the ARLFV in this concept design is expected to feature a conversion-cost reduction of 12 percent for a capsize bulk carrier and 25 percent for a VLCC, NYK claims.

In the Phase 2 of the project, the three companies would work with shipyards and marine equipment manufacturers on the actual design of the ARLFV based on the concept design, NYK said.
