TotalEnergies supplies LNG cargo to PetroVietnam Gas

PetroVietnam Gas, a unit of state-owned PetroVietnam, has received a liquefied natural gas cargo from a unit of France’s TotalEnergies at its Thi Vai LNG terminal, the country’s first LNG import facility.

The 2010-built 154,914-cbm LNG carrier, Point Fortin, delivered during May 13-14 about 3 million MMBtu of LNG to the Thi Vai LNG terminal.

PetroVietnam Gas said in a statement that the LNG shipment came from Bontang, Indonesia, where Pertamina’s Bontang LNG facility is located.

The shipment, provided by TotalEnergies Gas & Power Asia, will be used to fuel power plants and to supply industrial customers, contributing to Vietnam’s energy security during the dry season, PetroVietnam Gas said.

The company arranged this shipment in an “urgent schedule” to meet the demand during heatwaves.

Usually, an LNG spot shipment needs to be arranged about 60 days before the delivery date, but this time the purchase offer was made just 20 days before the expected arrival date, PetroVietnam Gas said.

Also, the delivery window was brought forward 8 days earlier to meet the urgent requirements of Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), it said.

Fourth LNG shipment

This shipment is the third for the Thi Vai LNG terminal this year, and the fourth since the launch of terminal last year.

Prior to the latest cargo, PetroVietnam Gas received on April 29 about 60,000 tons of LNG from PetroChina, and it received on April 11 some 70,000 tons of LNG from QatarEnergy LNG, previously known as Qatargas.

PetroVietnam Gas officially launched its Thi Vai LNG terminal in the coastal area southeast of Ho Chi Minh City on October 29, 2023 after nearly 4 years of construction and commissioning.

In July 2023, LNG giant Shell delivered the commissioning LNG cargo to the terminal from the Bontang LNG plant.

PetroVietnam Gas also in February this year started supplying LNG via trucks from its Thi Vai LNG import terminal to industrial customers.

The Thi Vai LNG import facility consists of one 180,000-cbm LNG tank, a jetty, and regas area.

The terminal has a capacity of 1 mtpa in its first phase, but PetroVietnam Gas plans to boost the capacity to 3 mtpa in the next stage.
