Wartsila scores contract for Spanish LNG bunkering vessel

A unit of Finland’s Wartsila has secured a contract to supply a cargo handling system for a new LNG bunkering vessel ordered by Scale Gas, a subsidiary of Spain’s Enagas, in China.

China’s Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering is building the vessel with a capacity of 12,500 cbm and the the ship will work in the Canary Islands.

Wartsila Gas Solutions won the contract from CIMC SOE and it was booked in the first quarter of this year, according to a statement by Wartsila.

It did not reveal the price tag of the contract.

The Wartsila equipment is scheduled to be delivered to the yard during the second quarter of 2025.

Wartsila has a long-standing relationship with Nantong CIMC SOE, and has supplied cargo handling systems for a number of LNG, LPG, ethane/ethylene, and also multi-gas carriers built by the yard, it said.

As per Scale Gas, the small-scale LNG unit of Enagas was founded in 2017, and currently has two LNG bunkering vessels in its fleet.

In November last year, marine fuel supplier Peninsula started delivering LNG as fuel to vessels in Gibraltar with the 12,500-cbm Levante LNG.

South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo built this vessel for Scale Gas and Peninsula for about $60 million.

In addition, Knutsen, Enagas, and Shell last year officially launched the 5,000-cbm LNG bunkering ship, Haugesund Knutsen, in the Spanish port of Barcelona.

Spain’s Armon Gijon built this LNG bunkering vessel for Knutsen and Scale Gas and this ship serves a charter with Shell.
