Engie’s unit books long-term capacity at France’s Fos Cavaou LNG terminal

A unit of French energy firm Engie has booked long-term regasification capacity at Elengy’s Fos Cavaou terminal near the southern city of Marseille.

Elengy, a unit of Engie’s GRTgaz, operates the Fos Cavaou LNG terminal via its subsidiary Fosmax LNG.

Engie Global Energy Management & Sales has won 30 TWh per year of regasification capacity at the Fos Cavaou LNG terminal, the firm said in a social media post on Monday.

The capacity booking is for 16 years, according to the unit of Engie.

“This regasification capacity will allow us to deliver more LNG volumes to Europe, further ensuring the security of supply for our clients,” it said.

The firm did not provide any additional information.

Last year, Elengy’s Fosmax LNG launched an open season for the facility with a capacity of 8.5 bcm per year or 100 TWh per year to make available additional primary capacity achieved through technical and regulatory debottlenecking, as well as capacity extension beyond 2030 until 2045 or more.

After the non-binding call for interest, the firm offered a primary capacity of 2.5 bcm per year from January 2025 onwards.

In addition, earlier this year it also offered to increase its capacity sales by 11 TWh in 2022, 13 TWh in 2023, and 30 TWh in 2024.

High demand

Elengy said in a separate statement issued on Tuesday that the binding phase closed on November 10, with the firm allocation of 30 TWh per year for 16 years, from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2040, the entire capacity offered for sale over this period.

The firm did not mention Engie in the statement.

Elengy said cumulative demand during the binding phase exceeded the offered capacity.

“This success goes hand in hand with the level of performance of Elengy’s LNG terminals and illustrates the dynamism of the LNG market and the interest to subscribe long-term regasification capacity with a major operator in a strategic location on the Mediterranean coast, in the heart of the port of Marseille-Fos industrial area,” it said.

Also, the LNG terminal operator added that it continues to study the possibility of marketing additional capacity on its LNG terminals.

Launched in 2010, the Fos Cavaou terminal is the newest facility of the three LNG import terminals Elengy operates.

The other two LNG plants are the Fos Tonkin facility which is also on the Mediterranean coast, and the Montoir-de-Bretagne facility on the Atlantic coast.
