Finnish state-owned energy firm and LNG supplier, Gasum, will bunker Hapag-Lloyd’s containerships with bio-LNG during 2025 and 2026.
Gasum said in a statement on Monday it will deliver in total 20,000 mt of bio-LNG to Hapag-Lloyd’s vessels.
The bio-LNG supplies will be used on a route between Rotterdam and Singapore, it said.
Earlier this year, Germany’s Hapag-Lloyd won the first tender by the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) for ocean shipping based on waste-based bio-LNG that achieves at least a 90 percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, Gasum said.
ZEMBA is a first-of-its-kind buyers’ group within the maritime sector with the mission to accelerate commercial deployment of zero-emission shipping solutions.
It is an initiative of Cargo Owners for Zero Emission Vessels (coZEV) and facilitated by the Aspen Institute Energy & Environment Program.
Gasum will be supplying Hapag-Lloyd with the needed amount of bio-LNG to fulfill the requirements of the ZEMBA tender.
The Finnish company produces biogas in its own 17 biogas plants in Finland and Sweden and has additionally established long-term partnerships with certified biogas producers throughout Europe.
Gasum’s goal is to offer 7 TWh of renewable gas to its customers yearly by 2027, including biomethane and e-methane.
On the other hand, Hapag-Lloyd recently took delivery of the seventh of twelve LNG dual-fuel newbuilds in South Korea. The company is also planning to order more LNG dual-fuel vessels, according to shipbuilding sources.
The company first ordered six 23,660-teu containerships from Hanwha Ocean in 2020, and it added six more sister vessels in 2021.
Besides newbuilds, Hapag-Lloyd operates the converted containership, Brussels Express, the world’s first ultra-large containership LNG retrofit.
