DNV: 17 LNG-powered ships ordered in November

Classification society DNV said that owners placed orders for 17 LNG-powered ships in November, mostly for regional trade in Europe.

Compared to the last month, orders dropped by 14 vessels. September still holds the record with 35 orders for LNG-powered vessels, according to DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight platform.

Martin Wold, principal consultant at DNV, said the year-to-date net order count rose to 238 LNG-powered ships.

“As opposed to majority of orders this year, the November projects were dominated by ships expected to be deployed in regional trade (Europe),” he said.

The November count includes orders by CMA CGM, Langh Ship, and Unity Line and Polferries. X-Press Feeders also ordered 8 methanol-fueled container feeders.

The DNV platform shows that 245 LNG-powered ships are already in operation with 407 on order.

LNG-powered car and passenger ferries lead the way with 42 in operation, followed by 30 offshore supply ships, and 29 oil/chemical tankers.

As per vessels on order, LNG-powered containerships and crude oil tankers account for a big part of the orders with 98 and 56 units, respectively.

These statistics do not include smaller inland vessels.
