LNG-powered MSC Verona delivered in China

Switzerland-based shipping giant MSC has taken delivery of the LNG dual-fuel containership, MSC Verona, from China’s Yangzijiang Shipbuilding.

Jiangsu Yangzi Xinfu Shipbuilding, a unit of Yangzijiang, handed over the vessel to MSC on Monday and the vessel left the yard on Wednesday.

This is MSC’s second LNG dual-fuel containership in a new series of vessels with a capacity of 16,000 teu, according to Yangzijiang.

Yangzijiang’s unit started building this vessel in September 2023 and launched it in March this year.

Last month, the shipbuilder held a naming ceremony for MSC Verona and its sister ship MSC Olbia.

In October 2022, Yangzijiang secured an order to build twelve LNG-powered containerships with a capacity of 16,000 teu for MSC.

Earlier the same year, Yangzijiang delivered the first LNG dual-fuel containership in MSC’s fleet, MSC Washington.

MSC is building a huge fleet of LNG dual-fuel containerships.

In September, MSC signed a deal to order LNG dual-fuel vessels from China’s Hengli Heavy Industry, a part of Hengli Group.

Prior to that, MSC booked LNG dual-fuel vessels at Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard.

On the other hand, Yangzijiang said last month that it had secured orders for 32 LNG dual-fuel and 17 methanol dual-fuel containerships this year.

Earlier this week, Yangzijiang also announced new orders for 21 vessels, with a total contract value of $2.63 billion.

The new orders include a contract for six LNG dual-fuel containerships with a capacity of 17,000 teu.

Danish shipping giant Maersk booked these vessels.
