MSC welcomes new LNG-fueled containership in its fleet

Switzerland-based shipping giant MSC has taken delivery of another LNG dual-fuel containership from China’s Yangzijiang Shipbuilding.

Jiangsu Yangzi Xinfu Shipbuilding, a unit of Yangzijiang, delivered MSC Iris on November 20, and the vessel departed the yard on November 22.

Yangzijiang said this is MSC’s eleventh LNG dual-fuel containership in a series of vessels with a capacity of 16,000 teu.

Also, this is another large containership built by Yangzijiang equipped with a wind deflector, which can reduce the wind resistance of the ship during sailing.

In October 2022, Yangzijiang secured an order to build twelve LNG-powered containerships with a capacity of 16,000 teu for MSC.

Yangzijiang said in February that it had secured orders for 38 LNG dual-fuel and 23 methanol dual-fuel containerships in 2024.

However, the shipbuilder did not secure orders for LNG dual-fuel vessels this year.

According to Yangzijiang’s business update released last week, the shipbuilder had 50 LNG dual-fuel container ships in its order book as of November 17.

These vessels include 28 LNG dual-fuel containerships with a capacity of 17,000 teu, 10 LNG dual vessels with a capacity of 24,000 teu, and 10 LNG dual-fuel vessels with a capacity of 9,000 teu.
