Siem Offshore adding battery power to two LNG PSVs

Norway-based Siem Offshore is continuing to add battery power to its ships and plans to install battery systems on two more LNG-fueled platform supply vessels.

Siem Offshore recently upgraded its LNG-powered PSV Siem Symphony with a hybrid battery package as it looks to further reduce emissions.

Now the company plans to add similar systems on its LNG PSV Siem Thiima and LNG PSV Siem Pride.

According to a statement by Siem Offshore, it has awarded a contract to Kongsberg Maritime to provide a hybrid battery package including shore power facilities for Siem Thiima. This vessel serves a charter with Australian LNG player Woodside.

Also, the dual-fuel LNG PSV Siem Pride will get a hybrid battery package from Wartsila Norway. This vessel works for Norske Shell.

Both of the LNG PSVs would get the upgrade in the first quarter of 2022, Siem Offshore said.

In addition to these vessels, one of Siem Offshore’s OSCV’s will receive a double battery system with DC-link from VARD Electro.

This would allow the vessel to operate for one hour in fully electric mode and provide estimated fuel savings in excess of 20 percent, Siem Offshore said. Installation works for this vessel will also take place in the first quarter of next year.

“We are very pleased to see how well our customers and end clients are responding to these environmental upgrades, which will even further reduce their operating cost and carbon footprint,” operation manager Jon August Houge, said.
