Spain’s Repsol launches LNG bunkering terminal in Santander

Spain’s Repsol has launched a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering terminal in Santander to supply vessels operated by French shipping firm Brittany Ferries.

Repsol is already operating what it says is the first LNG bunkering terminal in Spain.

The facility, which features one 1,000-cbm tank, came into operation in July last year in the northern Spanish port of Bilbao.

The terminal in the neighboring city of Santander has the same capacity and is worth about 16 million euros ($17.1 million).

Repsol said in in December it planed to launch this facility during the first half of 2023.

Both terminals are co-financed by the European Commission through the CEF-Connecting Europe Facilities Programme.

These terminals will fuel LNG-powered ferries as part of a long-term collaboration deal for LNG supply Repsol and Brittany Ferries signed back in 2019.

The LNG-powered Salamanca already regularly fuels at Bilbao. Brittany Ferries took delivery of this vessel it chartered from Sweden’s Stena RoRo in November 2021.

Repsol will fuel its sister ship, Santona, at the Bilbao bunkering facility.

China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Weihai delivered this LNG-powered ship in December last year.
