Finland’s Gasum will build a new LNG and CNG fueling station in Kivisto, Vantaa, as the number of gas-powered trucks continues to grow in the country.
Gasum said in a statement on Tuesday it would start building the station in April and plans to open the facility in late summer.
With this move, the company is strengthening its network of filling stations in the Helsinki region by building the station next to the Hameenlinnanvayla highway.
The fueling station, supported by EU’s Connecting Europe Facility, will serve all gas-powered vehicle segments.
In addition to heavy-duty transport, the station would also serve passenger car customers, the firm said.
It would have two liquefied gas dispensers, one compressed gas dispenser for passenger cars but also one compressed gas dispenser for heavy-duty vehicles, it said.
Biogas expansion
Kesko’s unit Onninen will use the filling station as it looks to reduce emissions in operations and transport and become “emission-free” by 2030.
“Use of biogas in Onninen’s transport is a step towards reaching that goal. The station to be built in Kivisto is well placed for our operations and will be an excellent addition to the biogas filling station network,” Simo Halkosaari, Kesko’s logistics director, building and technical trade, Finland, said.
Olli Paasio, Gasum’s director, traffic in Finland, said biogas helps reduce transport emissions.
Renewable biogas can lead to an emissions reduction of up to 90 percent compared to fossil alternatives, he said.
This year, Gasum would open a total of four new stations distributing liquefied biogas in various parts of Finland, Paasio added.
Gasum has around 100 gas filling stations in the Nordic countries, with more than 30 of these stations distributing liquefied gas serving heavy-duty, long-haul transport.
In addition, the company produces biogas in 17 plants in Finland and Sweden, and also sources it from its Nordic and European partners.
Gasum plans to make 4 TWh of biogas available on the Nordic market by 2024.
