TMC wins gig for Matson’s containership conversion

Singapore-based C-LNG Solutions has contracted Norwegian firm TMC Compressors to deliver boil-off gas compressors to a US-built containership that is currently being converted to LNG dual-fuel propulsion.

Earlier this year, C-LNG Solutions won a contract from US firm Matson to provide its LNG fuel gas supply system for the 3,220-teu LNG-ready, Daniel K. Inouye, built in 2018 by US-based Philly Shipyard.

C-LNG will supply three 1350-cbm type C LNG fuel tanks with in-tank pumps and tank gauging system, low-pressure vaporizer and buffer tank, glycol-water system, and N2 system.

The firm has subcontracted TMC to provide the boil-off gas compressors to C-LNG’s fuel gas supply system.

These boil-off gas compressors can work on both dual-fuel vessels, for example LNG in combination with bunker oil, and single-fuel LNG vessels.

Norway-headquartered TMC said in a statement it would manufacture the boil-off gas compressors in the Nordic region and ship it to a Chinese yard which is converting the containership.

TMC firm did not reveal the price tag of the deal.

Besides these two firms, Germany’s MAN Energy Solutions won a contract from Matson to retrofit the main engine of the containership in question.

MAN’s after-sales division, MAN PrimeServ, will retrofit the vessel’s 7S90ME-C engine to an MAN 7S90ME-GI type capable of operating on LNG and fuel oil.

Matson previously said it expects to invest about $35 million in the LNG installation on Daniel K. Inouye.

It also recently ordered three new 3,600-teu LNG-powered Aloha Class containerships at compatriot Philly Shipyard for about $1 billion.
