Turkish shipbuilder Cemre has secured a contract to build an LNG-powered fishing vessel for Norway’s Sorheim Holding.
Developed in partnership with Norwegian design company Skipteknisk and Selvag, the 79.5 meters long Selvag Senior purse seiner/pelagic trawler will be the third in the world to use LNG fuel, according to Cemre.
Besides LNG propulsion and a 350 cubic meter tank, the vessel will also feature a battery pack of 1 MWh.
The battery pack replaces a diesel-powered auxiliary engine and will help to flatten the load on the main engine during the voyage.
Furthermore, the owner will also use it as power source at the port. At the port, the vessel will be able to receive a high capacity of electric power from the land power grid when charging its battery pack, Cemre said.
The newbuilding will be equipped for pelagic trawling and purse seining with pumping both over the side and the aft. All winches and fish pumps will be electrically driven and return effects will go to the battery bank.
Cemre said it would build the vessel in accordance with the DNV GL class. It did not reveal the price tag of the contract.
Earlier this year, the Turkish yard launched Libas, the world’s first battery and LNG driven purse seiner/trawler. This vessel belongs to Norwegian fishing group Liegruppen.
Additionally, the yard has another order from Norwegian fishing company Teige Rederi. Sunny Lady will also sail on LNG and have a battery pack.
