China’s SSES in 100th LNG bunkering op

China’s Shanghai SIPG Energy Service (SSES) said it has completed the 100th bonded LNG bunkering operation in Shanghai since March 2022.

During the milestone ship-to-ship operation on May 20, the 20,000-cbm Hai Gang Wei Lai delivered LNG to the 2022-built 15,000-teu MSC Kayley in Yangshan port, Shanghai.

With 100 refueling operations, SSES has delivered in total 579,626 cbm of bonded LNG, it said in a statement.

SSES, a unit of China’s terminal operator Shanghai International Port (SIPG) and Shenergy, mainly delivered LNG to containerships chartered or owned by French shipping giant CMA CGM under a deal with the latter.

The firm completed the first LNG bunkering operation in March 2022 under this deal with CMA CGM.

Earlier this year, SSES also bunkered CMA CGM Indianapolis, its first delivery to an LNG-powered pure car and truck carrier.

Moreover, SSES also recently completed the first bunkering operation to an MSC containership with the large LNG bunkering vessel, Hai Gang Wei Lai.

The firm announced in September last year that SIPG signed a framework LNG bunkering agreement with Switzerland-based shipping giant MSC to fuel the latter’s LNG-powered bunkering vessels.

Last month, SIPG also signed a deal with South Korea’s HMM to bunker its vessels with LNG and methanol.

Besides LNG bunkering, SSES claims it recently completed the first green methanol bunkering operation in China.

SSES used what it says is the world’s largest methanol bunkering vessel, Hai Gang Zhi Yuan, to fuel the 16,000-teu Astrid Mærsk.

Zhoushan Putuo Changhong International Shipyard converted the bunkering vessel, previously known as Jiuli 668, to add methanol bunkering equipment.

China’s first methanol bunkering ship has a capacity of 16,000 cbm, SSES said.
