China’s CNOOC nears launch of six giant Binhai LNG tanks

China National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC) said it had completed the main construction on the six giant LNG storage tanks at its Binhai LNG import terminal in Jiangsu.

According to a statement by CNOOC Gas & Power, China’s largest LNG storage base, “Yancheng Green Energy Port”, has on April 24 completed perlite filling of six LNG storage tanks each with the capacity of 270,000 cubic meters.

This marked the completion of the main construction of the six giant LNG tanks.

CNOOC’s unit noted that expanded perlite is one of the most important components of LNG tank insulation.

The six LNG storage tanks were filled with 5200 tons of perlite, nearly 130,000 cubic meters after expansion, which is equivalent to the size of 46 standard swimming pools, it said.

CNOOC Gas & Power did not say when it expects to launch the tanks.

Local media reports suggest that the launching is expected in June this year.

Prior to this, the company completed in January hydro testing of all of the six storage tanks.

This procedure, also known as hydrostatic testing, ensures LNG tank safety and reliability.

World’s largest onshore LNG storage tanks

The state-owned energy giant built the tanks under the Phase I expansion project.

These are world’s largest onshore LNG storage tanks, such as the operational tank at Sinopec’s Qingdao LNG import terminal and the five tanks at CNOOC’s Zhuhai LNG import terminal.

The six tanks at CNOOC’s LNG terminal located in Yancheng Binhai Port Industrial Park add to the already four existing tanks with a capacity of 220,000 cbm.

In August last year, CNOOC received the 30th cargo of LNG at its Jiangsu-Binhai LNG import terminal since September 2022.

LNG producer Qatargas, now QatarEnergy LNG, delivered the first LNG cargo on September 26, 2022.
