CNOOC launches China’s largest LNG storage base

China National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC) has launched what it says is China’s largest LNG storage base at its Binhai LNG import terminal in Jiangsu.

According to a statement by CNOOC Gas & Power, six LNG storage tanks each with the capacity of 270,000 cubic meters at the “Yancheng Green Energy Port” were completed on June 30.

This marked the completion of China’s largest LNG storage tanks, it said.

The tanks are about 65 meters high and have 100.6 meters in diameter.

In April, CNOOC’s unit completed perlite filling of the giant tanks, while in January it completed hydro testing of the tanks.

Huge LNG storage capacity expansion

The state-owned energy giant built the tanks under the Phase I expansion project.

These are world’s largest onshore LNG storage tanks, such as the operational tank at Sinopec’s Qingdao LNG import terminal and the five tanks at CNOOC’s Zhuhai LNG import terminal.

The six tanks at CNOOC’s LNG terminal located in Yancheng Binhai Port Industrial Park add to the already four existing tanks with a capacity of 220,000 cbm.

CNOOC Gas & Power says the total capacity of 2.5 million cubic meters can satisfy gas consumption of 10 million households for 8 months.

Besides this expansion, CNOOC is expanding its facilities in Ningbo and Zhuhai with in total 11 storage tanks with a capacity of 270,000 cubic meters, it said.

Following completion of these projects, the total LNG tank capacity of CNOOC will reach 8,510,000 cubic meters, it said.

CNOOC’s unit noted that China’s LNG industry has developed rapidly in recent years.

Since the completion of the first domestic LNG receiving terminal in 2006, 28 LNG receiving terminals have been built in China, with an annual receiving capacity of more than 116 million tons, ranking among the top in the world, it said.

China is the world’s largest LNG importer and the country imported 32.42 million tonnes of LNG during January-May this year, a rise of 18.1 percent year-on-year, according to customs data.
