BW Tatiana FSRU wraps up first STS LNG op in El Salvador

The 137,000-cbm BW Tatiana FSRU, that serves the Energía del Pacífico (EDP) LNG-to-power project in El Salvador, has completed its first ship-to-ship transfer in Acajutla.

BW LNG, a unit of the Singapore-based gas shipping giant BW, said the FSRU received around 125,000 cbm of LNG from Knutsen’s LNG carrier, Bilbao Knutsen, on April 1.

The LNG shipping firm did not provide any additional information.

According to Bilbao Knutsen’s AIS data provided by VesselsValue, the LNG carrier brought the shipment to the FSRU from Trinidad and Tobago’s Point Fortin LNG export plant.

To remind, the FSRU left the Keppel Tuas shipyard in Singapore in August last year and arrived at its new home in the port of Acajutla in October.

Keppel won the contract from a joint venture consisting of BW’s LNG unit and US-based Invenergy to convert Shell’s LNG carrier Gallina to an FSRU.

BW previously said the converted vessel is Central America’s first FSRU, representing a key component of the LNG-to-power project.

In addition, two new SAAM Towage tugs are serving the FSRU and the LNG-to-power project.

In November last year, Finnish tech firm Wartsila announced the installation and successful operation of the FSRU.

The vessel will provide fuel to the integrated project that includes a 378-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant. The plant will get the gas via a subsea pipeline.

El Salvador’s first LNG-to-power project would transform the country into a net exporter of electric power instead of a net importer, Wartsila previously said.

Additionally, the project would replace heavy fuel oil power generation and offer flexibility needed to support increasing utilization of renewable energy into the national grid, it said.
